W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczące wpływu dodatku krzemionkowych popiołów lotnych, w ilości: 0, 20 i 30% masy cementu na procesy pękania w betonach konstrukcyjnych. Odporność na pękanie, przy I modelu pękania (rozciąganie przy zginaniu), badano na belkach trójpunktowo zginanych z jedną rysą pierwotną wg zaleceń RILEM: „Determination of fracture parameters (KIc and CTODc) of plain concrete using three-point bend tests”. Przy II modelu pękania, (ścinanie w kierunku podłużnym do krawędzi szczeliny), stosowano kostki sześcienne z dwoma rysami pierwotnymi typu Compact Shear Specimen – CSS. Elementy stalowe, występujące w urządzeniu, służyły do precyzyjnego zamocowania próbki w uchwytach maszyny wytrzymałościowej. Do badań wykorzystano kompaktową platformę CSM Instruments. Podczas eksperymentów analizowano obszar w ITZ kruszywa grubego z zaczynem w pięciu punktach pomiarowych, tzn. w odległości: 5, 25, 50, 100 i 150 µm od granicy ziarna. Odciski w betonie wykonywano wgłębnikiem Berkovicha z zastosowaniem techniki DSI.
The paper presents results of tests on the effect of the addition of siliceous fly ashes (FA) in the amount of: 0, 20 and 30% by weight of cement on the fracture processes in structural concretes. The analyses were carried out based on the results of the macroscopic and microstructural tests as well as numerical calculations. In the coarse of experiments, measurements of compressive and tensile strength of concrete at splitting were done as well as fracture toughness for: I, II and III model of cracking. To evaluate the fracture toughness of concretes, three separate measurement stations were prepared. Fracture toughness at the I model of cracking was tested on three-point bending beams with one initial crack recommended by RILEM: „Determination of fracture parameters (KIc and CTODc) of plain concrete using three-point bend tests”. At the II model of cracking (shearing in the longitudinal direction with regard to the crack edge), cubes with two initial cracks of Compact Shear Specimen (CSS) type were used. For tests in accordance with III model of cracking (shearing in the transverse to the crack edge direction – antiplane shear), a special device was designed and manufactured that comprises of: concrete cylinder with a circumferential notch at their half-height, steel top and bottom plates and three types of steel bolts. Steel elements in the device were used for precise mounting of the specimen in the holders of the testing machine. Experimental studies according to I and II model of cracking were carried out on the press MTS 810, while according to III model of cracking – on the axial-torsion press MTS 809 – Axial Torsional Test System. Fracture toughness of concretes was determined based on the critical stress intensity factors: S KIc , KIIc and KIIIc, and then a generalized fracture toughness Kc was determined for each of the composites. To examine the evolution of cracks in concretes during the ongoing process of loading, a system for optic three-dimensional deformations and displacements ARAMIS was used. A complement of assessment of mechanical parameters were microstructural analyses of concretes. For this purpose, microscopic tests SEM and nanoindentation tests were helpful. In order to establish a link between the structure of concretes and its mechanical parameters, materials taken from the zone of destruction of concretes were examined. During microscopic tests, the size of cracks occurring in the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) of coarse aggregate with cement matrix was evaluated. In nanohardness tests, the microstructure of concretes in the ITZ region was tested. The microstructural testing was carried out using a QUANTA FEG 250 at magnification from 200 to 80000 times equipped with an energy dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS EDAX). The tests were performed in both the low and high vacuum. A compact platform CSM Instruments was used in the nanohardness testing. An area in the ITZ of coarse aggregates with paste was analysed in the five measurement points during the experiments, i.e. at the distance of: 5, 25, 50, 100 and 150 µm from the grain boundary. The indents in concrete were create by Berkovich indenter using DSI technique. Based on the microstructure analysis of zones of concrete taken from areas in the vicinity of initial cracks, it was concluded that the additive of siliceous fly ashes modifies the microstructure of ITZ. Studies also showed that there is a clear relationship between generalized fracture toughness of concretes and the width of the crack at the interface of coarse aggregate with the matrix and nanohardness of ITZ. During the tests, the effect of age of concretes modified with the additive of siliceous fly ashes on analysed mechanical parameters and microstructure of composites was determined. The experiments were carried out after: 3, 7, 28, 90, 180 and 365 days of curing. The carried out tests showed a significant effect of curing on the obtained experimental results. In order to fully analyse the fracture processes in the concretes with the additive of siliceous fly ashes, and the evaluation of the accuracy of the results obtained during the experiments, three numerical models that corresponded to the tested elements with both the geometry and load diagrams. For the threepoint bending beam – a flat model, and for a cube and cylinder – threedimensional models were used. Numerical calculations were done in Abaqus 6.13. During the tests, the conventional finite element method – FEM as well as Extended Finite Element Method – XFEM were used. Both calculation methods proved to be useful and numerical models proved to be very effective. The designed models allowed the assessment of the shape of the cracks and directions of their propagation from the crack initiation until the destruction of the specimens. Comparison of the results obtained through computer simulations and experimental studies showed a clear qualitative and quantitative convergence. On the basis of comprehensive analysis of fracture processes in concretes, in which some part of binder is replaced by active pozzolana siliceous fly ashes, it can be concluded that the additive of this type of fly ashes in the amount of 20 and 30% by weight of cement has a significant influence on: the change of fracture toughness of concretes, microstructure of the ITZ and the size of cracks occurring in the ITZ region of coarse aggregate. The properties of composites with the additive of siliceous fly ashes depend on the age of the concrete during tests. 20% additive of fly ashes guarantees high fracture toughness in mature concretes, while the additive of fly ashes in the amount of 30% weight of cement has a beneficial effect on the parameters of concrete only after half a year of curing. Both the 20% and 30% additive of siliceous fly ashes significantly reduce the fracture toughness at a early age.
