Wystawa powstała z okazji jubileuszu Biblioteki Politechniki Lubelskiej. Prezentowane zdjęcia to swojego rodzaju zapis zmian i przeształceń, które dokonywały się od samych początków działalności Biblioteki do czasów obecnych. Biblioteka mieściła się w kilku lokalizacjach i działała w bardzo różnych warunkach na przestrzeni tych 70 lat. Zmieniały się magazyny, czytelnie i biura, sposoby katalogowania książek i urządzenia do pracy. Ludzie oczywiście też się zmieniali. Mijały lata, a przez Bibliotekę przewinęły się dziesiątki pracowników i tysiące studentów, miały miejsce (nomen omen) miliony codziennych i niecodziennych zdarzeń, rozmów, relacji, interakcji… I właśnie to wszystko – czas, miejsce i ludzie – stworzyło coś, co w naszym odczuciu pozostaje niezmienną kwintesencją tej wspólnoty czasów, miejsc i ludzi, a co dawniej zwykło się nazywać „duchem miejsca”: niematerialną, opiekuńczą i stale obecną siłą sprawiającą, że dana przestrzeń jest jedyna w swoim rodzaju. Dla nas, byłych i obecnych pracowników, Biblioteka (obecnie Centrum Informacji Naukowo-Technicznej Politechniki Lubelskiej) jest znaczną częścią życia. To codzienna praca, relacje ze współpracownikami, różnorodne doświadczenia, to cenny czas, który każdy z nas tu spędził. Z sentymentem i respektem wspominamy to, co i jak było w przeszłości – i tej niedawnej, i tej już nieco odleglejszej. A jednocześnie mamy nowe plany, ambicje i wizje na przyszłość. Wszystko się zmienia, ale duch miejsca pozostaje.
The exhibition was organised to mark the anniversary of the Lublin University of Technology Library. The photographs on display offer a record of the changes and transformations that have taken place from the very beginnings of the Library’s existence to the present day. The Library has been housed in several locations and has operated under very different conditions over the course of these 70 years. The storage areas, reading rooms and offices have changed, as have the methods of cataloguing books and the equipment used. People, of course, have changed too. As the years passed, dozens of staff members and thousands of students passed through the Library’s doors; millions of everyday and extraordinary events, conversations, relationships and interactions took place (nomen omen)… And it is precisely all of this – time, place and people – that has created something which, in our view, remains the unchanging essence of this community of times, places and people, and which used to be called the ‘spirit of the place’: an intangible, protective and ever-present force that makes a given space one of a kind. For us, former and current staff, the Library (now the Centre for Scientific and Technical Information at the Lublin University of Technology) is a significant part of our lives. It is our daily work, our relationships with colleagues, our diverse experiences; it is the precious time that each of us has spent here. It is with fondness and respect that we look back on what was and how things were in the past – both the recent past and that which lies a little further back. At the same time, we have new plans, ambitions and visions for the future. Everything changes, but the spirit of the place remains.
