Badania obejmowały: strukturę chemiczną, pomiary cech geome-trycznych folii, barwę i połysk, właściwości cieplne, chropowatość zewnętrznej po-wierzchni folii oraz wyznaczenie charakterystyki mechanicznej.
The aim of the dissertation was to determine the effect of modifying low-density polyethylene with thermoplastic starch in the mass content range of 0–50% on the prop-erties of the biocomposition, as well as on the characteristics of blown film extrusion and the properties of the obtained films. The conducted research allowed the author to identify technological problems occurring during blown film extrusion of polyethylene/thermo-plastic starch biocomposition, and to define the relationship between the extrusion pro-cess conditions and the properties of the obtained film. In the first stage of experimental research, polyethylene/thermoplastic starch com-positions with the addition of a compatibilizer – polyethylene grafted with maleic anhy-dride – were produced on a twin-screw extruder. Chemical structure, normal density, melt flow rate, p-ν-T relationship, thermal properties and moisture content were tested on the finished pellets. It has been shown that thermoplastic starch acts as a plasticizer for poly-ethylene, despite the fact that it is characterized by poorer processability. The biocompo-sition has a higher MFR value than each of its components alone. Significantly smaller changes in the specific volume of the composition during cooling were found with in-creasing starch content, which has a considerable effect on the properties of the film. The extruded biocompositions, as well as the thermoplastic starch pellets themselves, were characterized by a very low moisture content, i.e. below 0.5%. In the second stage of the experimental research, the blown film extrusion process was carried out, whereby the input parameters were the content of thermoplastic starch in the biocomposition, the film blow-up ratio, the rotational speed of the film wind-up roller and the temperature of the extrusion head. The following values characterizing the blown film extrusion process were determined: the mass flow rate of the material, the maximum temperature of the extrudate, the freeze line height, the cooling air flow rate, the air pres-sure inside the blown film bubble and the specific energy consumption. Studies have shown that the presence of thermoplastic starch causes autothermal heating of the pro-cessed composition in the plasticizing system of the extruder, and the intensity of this effect increases with its content. As a result, the temperature of the extrudate and the freeze line height increase, as in consequence does the required cooling efficiency. How-ever, the specific energy consumption is reduced, because the heat generated by autother-mal heating reduces the power consumption of the plasticizing system and the extrusion head heaters. The factors that predispose the blown film bubble to lose stability were determined, such as high content of thermoplastic starch, low blow-up ratio, low rota-tional speed of the film wind-up roller and high temperature of the extrusion head. In the third stage of the experimental research, the properties of the obtained bio-composite films were determined. The conducted tests included chemical structure, meas-urements of film geometric features, colour and gloss, thermal properties, roughness of the film outer surface and determination of mechanical characteristics. Despite the effect of autothermal heating, no changes were found in the chemical structure of the extruded biocomposite film. The geometric features of the film depended mainly on the blow-up ratio and the rotational speed of the film wind-up roller. A significant effect of the starch content on the film thickness and the topography of its surface was also observed, which is related to the different p-v-T characteristics of polyethylene and thermoplastic starch. The presence of starch in the composition also reduces yield stress and tensile strength. Instead, it improves the elongation at break in the longitudinal direction, which proves a good level of compatibilization. In addition, the interaction of the thermoplastic starch content and the rotational speed of the film wind-up roller has been shown to affect the film tensile deformation mechanism and the puncture mechanism. Spectrophotometric tests allowed the conclusion that the starch content affects the perception of the back-ground colour behind a single film layer. This effect can be compensated by reducing of the film thickness. It is possible to produce films with a 50% content of thermoplastic starch, the single layer of which will not have a noticeable effect on the background col-our, however it is necessary to use high blow-up ratios and values of wind-up roller rota-tional speed.
