Współczesne podejście do ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego wymaga starannego rozważenia różnych strategii ochrony i rewitalizacji obiektów historycznych, szczególnie tych znajdujących się w stanie ruiny. Obiekty te, zachowane w formie ruin, posiadają wyjątkowe znaczenie historyczne, symboliczne i regionalne, a jednocześnie stawiają przed konserwatorami specyficzne wyzwania związane z ich zabezpieczeniem i udostępnianiem.
Contemporary approaches to the protection of cultural heritage require careful consideration of different strategies for the protection and revitalisation of historical sites, especially those in a state of disrepair. This dissertation deals with the issue of partial restoration as a form of protection of historical ruins, focusing on selected castles of the Dukes of Mazovia. These objects, preserved in the form of ruins, have exceptional historical, symbolic and regional significance, and at the same time pose specific challenges to conservators in terms of their conservation and accessibility. The work explores how such interventions can ensure the long-term preservation of these monuments while respecting their authenticity and cultural value. The dissertation is concerned with issues relating to the conservation of historic ruins, including their significance for cultural heritage and the challenges of conservation. Particular attention is given to the integration of ruins into their surroundings and their functions in the context of contemporary social needs. The research also addresses the adaptation of castle ruins, taking into account issues of preserving authenticity while introducing new functions. Different approaches to conservation in Poland and Europe are presented, with a focus on projects carried out in recent years. The research part of the work focuses on the analysis of the ruins of the castles of the Dukes of Mazovia: in Ciechanów, Czersk, Liwa, Sochaczew and Rawa Mazowiecka. Each site has been characterised in terms of its historical significance, architectural features and the conservation work carried out to date. An assessment of contemporary methods of protection and conservation was made, taking into account four main aspects: contemporary cubic additions, the role of the ruins as an element of the landscape, the functionality of the courtyards and the technical protection of the structures. On the basis of the analyses carried out, principles for the treatment of castle ruins have been formulated, taking into account both technical and historical-cultural aspects. These principles aim to ensure the long-term conservation of the ruins, while at the same time allowing them to be used in a way that respects their historical value. The thesis concludes with conclusions on the effectiveness of current conservation methods, identifies best practices and proposes solutions that can be applied to future conservation efforts, with an emphasis on harmoniously combining the preservation of the heritage with the realisation of contemporary needs. The results of the study will allow the formulation of principles for the treatment of castle ruins, thus contributing to the discussion on the protection of ruins and the reconstruction of monuments in Poland and Europe.
