The present work concerns the issue of measuring the angle of rotation of the plane of polarisation of light propagating in optical fibre. In the measurement system used, the element sensitive to changes in the angle of rotation of the plane of polarisation of light is an tilted Bragg grating. The spectrum of light propagating through the grating is recorded with a spectrum analyser and then processed numerically to calculate the measured rotation angle. An analysis of the feasibility of using a discrete wavelet transform to process the measured light spectrum into the rotation angle of the light polarisation plane was performed. The author's method of processing the measured data using a discrete wavelet transform was proposed, performed, tested and discussed, thus proving the applicability of the analysed transform in the application under study. The first part of the paper contains a description of how Bragg gratings work and discusses their types. Methods of producing Bragg gratings are also presented, as well as how the gratings were produced for the purposes of this work. The second part of the work is devoted to the issue of measuring the angle of rotation of the plane of light polarisation. The existing state of the art is discussed. The laboratory stand used during the research is presented. The properties of the discrete wavelet transform were analysed in the context of its usefulness in the conducted research. Based on the analysis, an original method of measurement of the rotation angle of the plane of light polarisation has been designed, using the studied transform. In summary, it has been proved that it is possible to measure the angle of rotation of the plane of polarisation of light propagating in an optical fibre in the range 0° – 180° and the discrete wavelet transform can be successfully used to perform the required calculations.
