Poszukując współcześnie zrozumiałego odbioru naszych twórczych ingerencji projektowych winniśmy świadomie stosować zrozumiały do odczytania „kod” przekazu, aby „architektura była czytelnym komunikatem przestrzennym”.
At the turn of the XX and the XXI centuries the occurring geopolitical changes, the already started processes of transformation, and the obvious changes that occur in ethnic structures of the countries with multicultural heritage attempting communitarian access, all these factors create specific criteria for cultural conditioning evaluation. This work deals with a contemporarily important issue of perceiving architecture as an understandable spatial message originating from culture and tradition of the examined area with the simultaneous assumption that this message is recognizable in a multicultural region. Architects are expected to present a creative attitude of aware treatment of space as the fabric for creation, using modern instruments in search of new forms of architectural expression, both in protected regions and when they create “a new identity” in the encountered spaceapplying the planning realizations and “the language of drawing” understandable for the recipient. In this work, the author has advanced the thesis that one of the basic factors bearing significant importance in creative architectural creation is the architect’s understanding of specific space features describing everything applied under the term “THE IDENTITY OF A PLACE”. Proper understanding shall be the main guideline while searching for planning solutions that could guarantee the accuracy of choice (the accuracy in recognizing the spatial “code”), which despite arbitrary (currently fashionable) architectural language, blends with the encountered space, and creates contents from the cultural resources of a place. As a result, the new creations will be treated as obvious and clear. An ambiguous term “IDENTITY”, applied in the scientific considerations, advancing theses, and creative works connected with transforming “a common space for life”, becomes, in a period of intensified integration, “a key word” in the identification of the cultural multilayer origin. The place of identity in the history of culture and civilization, and the historical conditions of the European cultural identity that influence the creation of modern culturally varied Europe have been analysed in chapter two. The multicultural regions, presented in this chapter, which influenced the cultural creation of modern Europe, are the places of planning activity of the author. The issues connected with the identity of a place in studies and the implementations in these regions, carried out on the basis of the documents prepared by the teams under the author’s guidance, have been presented in chapter five. The superior task in pre-planning work was the recognition of the historical and cultural background and specifying the local record of the “code”, respecting the context of a place. The analysed research material has been the inspiration for presenting the concepts and the projects acknowledging the understanding of the region cultural distinctness. The author’s experience involving his studies and planning activities in the foreign regions, revised by his planning works in the country and conducting the educational process in the multicultural lubelski region, was the basis for the proposed method of analysing and planning. The author, via presenting his own and his planning team’s selected activities, supported by the preliminary analyses and studies, heads towards the authenticity of a message. Searching for the contemporary understanding of our creative planning interventions we shall consciously apply a clear “code” in our messages, so that “the architecture is an understandable spatial message”.
