Opracowane komputerowe modele umożliwiły udoskonalenie metod obliczania parametrów stabilności przewodów i uzwojeń nadprzewodnikowych.
The aim of this dissertation is to present the elaborated theory of thermal stability of high-current superconducting devices. The crucial components of these devices are superconducting wires, tapes and windings. They work in extremely low temperatures (4.2 K - 80 K) and conduct currents of considerable engineering densities (~106 A/m2 ) at strong magnetic fields. Very slight energetic disturbances can trigger an abrupt runaway superconductivity loss (quench), which causes conductor and winding burnout and damage leading to the failure of the superconducting device. In order to prevent such failures, some conditions of stable operation for superconducting wires and windings have been considered. The stable operation indicates spontaneous recovery of the superconducting state, which has been temporarily lost due to the local thermal disturbances. The computational models of the quench in the superconducting wires and windings, developed by the author, have been used to perform the superconductor stability analysis. These models are based on the one- or two-dimensional thermal diffusion equation, which takes into account the temperature nonlinearity and temporary and spacial inhomogeneous distributions of the superconducting components’ thermal conductivity, capacity and electrical resisivity. The diffusion equation has been coupled in the computational algorithm with the superconductor critical state model and with the inhomogeneous distribution of the magnetic field in the winding. The transient heat power density distributions, which determine heat generation in the superconducting components during the quench, have also been taken into consideration in the models. The developed computational models have made it possible to improve the evaluation methods of some superconducting component stability parameters. The transient distributions of operation temperature, critical temperature, critical current and heat power density in the composite superconducting MgB2/Cu wires, in the 2G YBCO coated conductors and in the cylindrical superconducting NbTi/Cu windings have been evaluated during the quench processes. The computations have allowed to investigate the conductor’s operation current and temperature influence on minimum quench energy, resistive zone propagation velocity and other quench parameters put forward by the author. The impact of energy, duration and length of the resistive disturbance pulse on the quench parameters has also been examined. The influence of disturbance location and energy on superconducting NbTi/Cu winding temperature has been studied in order to evaluate the minimum quench energy and determine the stable operation conditions. The obtained research results contribute to the stability theory of the highcurrent superconducting devices, which is indispensable in the design process of these devices.
