W celu ilościowego opisu powierzchniowej struktury spękań termicznych, zaproponowano pomiar i wykorzystanie trzech parametrów stereologicznych: ̅ – średnie pole powierzchni klastra, – średnia długość linii obwodu klastra, ̅ – średnia szerokość rozwarcia rysy. Opracowano zależności pomiędzy zmierzonymi parametrami stereologicznymi spękań termicznych, a zbadanymi w pracy właściwościami mechanicznymi i fizycznymi zaczynów cementowych.
Changing nature of environmental impacts (including thermal effects) in which the cement composites are operating, causes in the material’s structure a number of phenomena that can cause cracking of the composite. Cracks combine by propagation, or intersect to form on the material’s surface a characteristic structure of cracks known as the thermal cracks – the cluster cracks – the map cracking. The cluster structure in accordance with the principles of the self-organization exhibits the fractal nature. At work the identification of factors affecting the geometrical characteristics of the thermal cracks (the cluster cracks) of modified cement pastes was carried out and the relationships between selected material properties of the cement pastes and the stereological parameters of these cracks were determined. Modification of the cement pastes consisted of replacing part of cement by the metakaolinite or the microsilica, as well as the addition of a distributed reinforcement in the form of the polypropylene fibers or the carbon nanotubes. Tested has been a total of 10 series of the modified cement pastes, in which within each series of samples were performed at three w/b indicators equal respectively 0.4; 0.5; 0.6. For the quantitative description of the surface structure of the thermal cracks, three stereological parameters were proposed and used: ̅ – the average cluster area, – the average cluster perimeter, ̅ – the average crack width. The image analysis procedures have been developed for the measurement of these characteristics. Laboratory tests have allowed to define the main material characteristics of the tested cement pastes, i.e., the compressive and the tensile strength, the apparent density, the shrinkage. The fragility and the growth of linear deformation after exposure to elevated temperature was calculated. These characteristics have been specified for the standard samples and the samples after thermal load. The modified cement pastes have been subjected to the influence of temperature 250°C, for a period of 4 hours. The temperature load of the samples caused that the pressure of water vapor created in the pores and the capillaries of the cement paste, and the volumetric deformation of the material resulted in propagation and transformation of the technological cracks into the macro-cracks visible on the samples’ surface that formed the structure of the cluster cracks. Ipso facto the initial stage of the material’s destruction was captured. The measurement, the image analysis, and the considerations carried out have shown that the geometric characteristics of the clusters depend on technological variables in the production process of the modified cement pastes. The structure’s self-organization process is shaped by the intermolecular interactions in a dispersion medium of the cement paste and is shaped by the physico-chemical system changes taking place as a result of the process of the cement’s hydration. It was found that the cluster size depends mostly on the capillary forces in the water - cement grains dispersion system, as well as the concentration of the dispersion phase (the binder’s grain) at the dispersing agent (water). In addition, the distance between the separation surfaces between clusters depends on the cluster’s deformation. The relationships between measured stereological parameters and studied in the work the mechanical and the physical properties of the cement pastes were developed. Analysis carried out showed that the physical parameters are more strongly correlated with the geometric characteristics of the clusters than the mechanical parameters. Research carried out using SEM and EDS have allowed the identification of the thermal micro-cracks, which are areas of the separation surfaces between clusters of lower levels compared to the observed clusters after scanning the surface of the sample. The nature of the research falls within the definition of the basic research, and the obtained results in the long term will be the necessary foundation for the development of non-destructive test method for the evaluation of the degree of degradation of cementitious material, which is working in a real building structure in operating conditions.
