Among the most applicable and technologically advanced high current superconducting devices there are Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL) and Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storages (SMES). Despite good perspective of application both type of superconducting devices as a consequence of their design and results of experimental examinations, only Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage systems have presently reached stage of limited commercial application in electromagnetic network. Commercial fabrication of SMES systems take place only in the United States, but in many laboratories of Western Europe, Japan, Russia, Korea and China there are intensive experimental and project designing works resulted in many kinds of experimental devices. Not very advanced level of superconducting technologies in other countries, also in Poland, is a consequence of underestimating their practical applications, lack of financial research support, but also small knowledge dissemination about this unique but very promising devices. Presented monograph bring closer problems of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storages that includes construction, operation conception and criterion of superconducting HTS magnet for SMES system as well as designing and exploitations problems of whole SMES. The monograph describes also selected SMES systems and their applications.
