The thesis presents FEM numerical analyses of the interaction between the building structure and the subsoil. Lublin is located within the Lublin Upland, which is largely composed of pleistocene loess coverings of a considerable thickness. The thickness of the loess covering ranges from several to over thirty metres. Therefore, a significant number of building structures is situated on the loess subsoil. The type of the subsoil has a significant impact on distribution of deformations and stresses in structural elements of buildings. The main aim of the thesis is to provide a detailed analysis of the building’s behaviour, taking into account the stiffness of loess subsoil. In order to solve the research problem, a review of the literature was carried out. It concerned issues connected with loess soils, constitutive subsoil models, numerical analyses, and the matters related to the determination of soil parameters. Own research was divided into two parts: general analysis of loess subsoil from Lublin and its surroundings, and numerical analyses and in-situ measurements on existing buildings. As a part of the general survey of loesses from the area of Lublin, 543 CPT/CPTU static soundings with a total length of over 4000 metres and 11 DMT/SDMT tests with a total length of 73 metres, along with the data from exploratory wells and laboratory tests were analysed. The analysis allowed to determine the statistical distribution of cone resistances qc and dilatometric constrained modulus MDMT. The main research works were carried out on two different buildings: low and wide (Cyprysowa), and high and compact (Kraśnicka). The research included CPT and SDMT in-situ tests, laboratory tests of the soil, measurements of the building settlements, measurements of natural vibrations. FEM numerical analyses in ABAQUS software were conducted in stages on the model of the entire building and its parts. The correctness of the representation of the real buildings in the numerical model was verified by comparing frequencies of natural vibrations from in-situ measurements with the results of calculations. Subsequent analyses concerned the determination of displacements and stresses at particular stages of the construction of the entire building. The subsoil was modelled and then subsequent storeys were added in stages. The calculated values of vertical displacements were compared with the results of geodetic measurements of the existing buildings. On the basis of analyses of CPT static tests it was possible to derive an empirical coefficient αm to determine the constrained modulus of loess, and to define the guidelines for testing of loess subsoil. It was shown that the loess soil, although seemingly homogeneous on a macroscopic level, is characterized by variable stiffness. It was proved that in the case of loess, the separation of geotechnical layers, with a liquidity index LI as the main parameter, is insufficient. In loess, geotechnical separations should be carried out on the basis of geotechnical sounding, e.g. CPT/CPTU or DMT, and cone resistance qc was proposed as the main parameter. It was also shown that the ground settlement affects the movement of building and its deformations, and the distribution of stresses in structural elements, which should be taken into account during design work. It is particularly important to consider the inhomogeneity of the subsoil when wide buildings are considered. In case of tall buildings, it is necessary to consider the stages of constructing subsequent storeys. Using the proposed approach ensures more reliable calculation results.
